I’m Sick of Being Sick (3 Sickly Thoughts)

I’ve been sick with a throat/nose/ear infection for six days now. I hear a constant ringing in my right ear, and all my body wants to do is lay in bed. And also not get anything done.

It started out with a funny feeling in my throat, and then that feeling started getting less and less funny. Eventually, it completely took out my voice, making it hard for me to even speak.

So I’ve been doing a lot of thinking instead.

Thought #1

Getting sick sucks, but maybe it’s our bodies trying to tell us something. Is it a coincidence that the week before my sickness started, I logged the most hours at work I’ve ever worked in my short career? “SLOW DOWN you idiot, and smell the chicken noodle soup.” While your head may feel like a balloon ready to pop, there are other parts of your body that are getting rest they desperately need.

Thought #2

“I can’t WAIT until I feel normal again” is a thought my brain keeps going back too. But the sad truth is, as soon as I’m not sick, I’ll just jump right back into my daily routine. Likely without a second thought about how grateful I am to be feeling better. I think a good perspective is a useful tool for staying motivated and happy.

Getting sick definitely brings a new frame of reference on what it means to feel ‘normal’. When I get better I’m going to try to be more intentional about looking back on where I am now. Hopefully, that makes me more grateful for life, and more motivated to do better in the future.

Thought #3

For me, one of the hardest parts about being sick is staying in a healthy headspace. Unfortunately, I am the type of person who always goes worst-case-scenario when something goes wrong with my health. If my ear starts hurting; I’m going deaf, and I’m my wrist is in pain; it’s probably broken. It’s always important to take a deep breath, and trust that everything is going to be okay. You’re not gonna be sick forever. This will end. So that’s why my final thought for this blog is “Take a deep breath, kick back, and enjoy the ride. Even in the hard parts.”

Whatever you’re going through, whether it’s physical sickness, mental sickness, or a situation that just makes you feel sick, remember that this will end. When all the cards hit the table, you’re going to be okay.

Thanks for reading.

  1. Sickness is your body’s way of telling you to slow down. It needs those resources to fight disease more than you need to do anything else. Although you can probably thank a colleague for your illness. People who ignore the signs of illness and go to work/school/play anyhow are how a contagious illness spreads.

The world is run by a bunch of type A personality people who think that coming to work while you are ill is a virtue. The little bit of productivity they squeeze out of a sick person is more important to them than everyone’s health – and it shows “dedication” to the employer. If I were the boss, my rule would be: See a doctor and stay away from me until you aren’t contagious anymore. The loss of productivity due to possible fakery is less than the loss due to people spreading genuine disease around.

  2. Feel better soon! And, some mom advice, you might want to steam your face several times a day. That always helps me when I get a sinus infection. 🙂

  3. Hello,

Yes, resting up when you are active is tough, but that’s how God designed us so we wouldn’t burn out. I am with you on hating being sick.

  4. Over time, I’ve gotten better at heeding that “funny feeling.” I wake up with a bit of a scratchy throat that goes away in half an hour, I’m using my Neti pot, going to bed early that night, and saying thank you for the warning.
