Never Try Never Fail, Those Are The Words I Live By

I find myself constantly being drawn to different creative endeavors. Whether it’s trying out route setting, taking pictures, or ‘attempting’ to make music, I’m always working on some side project.

Every single time I start out something new, I feel like a kid in a candy store. Like I just walked into Yosemite for the first time and everything is a V0. There are so many things I want to learn or try out. And in my head, it seems so easy. Sure I’ll have to practice, but I’ll be up the Nose in a couple of days!

I dream all day at work fantasies in which I enjoy (and excel in) the said activity, and then when I finally get home and try it,

I suck.

As does *almost* everyone who tries something for the first time. Alas, I can’t seem to get that through my thick skull. I then immediately get sad, eat some ice-cream, and go back to doing something I’m moderately good at.

“Never try never fail, those are the words I live by” is a quote from a robot named ‘Crank’ in the children’s movie appropriately named ‘Robots’. While he isn’t exactly an antagonist, he is constantly complaining throughout the entire story arch. When the robots go to save the world at the climax of the movie, Crank stays out of the action.

It’s a rather depressing moment of the movie, but I think we can all relate to Crank sometimes. For climbers, it’s amplified. Real climbing is about falling over and over and over again. You can go on Youtube and watch really good climbers send really hard routes all day, but falling is just a fact of life. Every single time you get on a route, you’re trying something new.

And when you want something so bad, failure can have a strong bite.

“Am I just not good enough?”

“What am I missing?”

“What do I have to do to climb this route?”

Everyone deals with these thoughts! So KEEP TRYING. Whatever you’re doing keep going! Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it. Get out of your own head, and start using your thoughts to encourage yourself. Wake up earlier if you have to, but make time for the things you love. Work harder, be driven, stay focused, and remember that it’s only in your head!

Please, tell me a little about what you are passionate about below. Of course, I’d also love it if you’d share this blog. You can do that by clicking the icons below. Thanks for reading!

  1. I think this is true. “Do or do not. There is no try.” We think we are trying a new thing, but we’re actually on the initial steps of doing that new thing. 🙂

  4. I have to remind myself of this all the time too. My husband, unfortunately, is one of those people that is phenomenal at EVERYTHING after his first try. I’m a very competitive person so this makes enjoying trying new things with him rather difficult. But on occasion, after much persistence, I have actually managed to beat him at stuff.

  5. Little Engine That Could. I have a similar problem with my writing. I’m a Jack of many trades, master of some. I want to write all kinds of genres, but it has me all over the place. I’d love to paint and Bob Ross made it look so easy. I can’t get out of my head on that one. So I stick to what I know. 😊. Great post!

  6. Wow, the couple first paragraphs, I thought I was reading about my life haha! I too get really enthusiastic about trying new things. When I see someone else (who is already an expert) do something, dance for example, I immediately imagine that I could do it easily. Why is that?!

  7. one way of looking at failure : it’s such an awesome feeling… think of it : it triggers so many thoughts / feelings / feedback – one is able to assess & course correct instead of going the wrong or different path ( of course sometime we feel low or are unhappy about failure ) what next … we can start thinking beyond the failure and get onto a different direction now loaded with experience ☺️ . the journey ( failure and success ) continues un till we reach the destination
