Virtual Reality

Before I even start my post, I must warn you that it definitely has COVID-19 influence and social isolation inspiration. I recognize, with partial burden, that the topic is getting overwhelming and without a doubt, saturating. However, this is the reality we currently live in and we cannot ignore it. Or… Can we?

Welcome to this “Whole New World,” the one where the unimaginable happens and doubts reign. Bienvenido! You have been invited to the fiction-reality of the 21st century and your unsolicited acceptance has already checked you in. The year 2020 is coming in strong and ‘Hotel California’ has got nothing on us. If we could have a soundtrack¹ for these times, it would be artistically inspired by the latter:  A song with the ability to scare the crap out of many yet still have a way to excite them.

With the growing uncertainty about the origins and long-lasting effects of COVID-19, this year makes video games a little more real and a little less leisurely. I have to be honest and say that reading the news gives me mad anxiety and ignoring it as well. It feels like we are trapped in a simulation where we have no choice but to follow an imposed/uncertain path and adapt to the obstacles set for us each day. Wait! Isn’t this life anyways? Perhaps it is, perhaps we have learned to live in the simulation far too well!

Of course, using the concept of a video game takes seriousness away from the issue and rejects the reality of it all. The numbers of affected rise each day along with the stories of families who have lost their loved ones. We know millions of civilians have lost their jobs and others are overworked to keep us afloat. The unpredictability of this virus is present each day. How did this even start? What will happen tomorrow? How many more will be infected? What will happen with the ones who have lost their job? The rent, mortgage, food? How are doctors doing? How are their families? How much longer will they be able to withstand? And many more.

As I write, I think that -right now,- there might not be a clear answer to all those questions. However, there is a human need to find a reasonable explanation to everything. When this desire is challenged, it can lead to exasperation and anxiety. I know some wish things were managed differently, some mourn, some budget, some wish they had their family members closer, and most hope it ends soon. If there is something I am sure of it’s that the world will have a different face when all is overcome. If this were a video game, new abilities will be acquired and a more challenging level unlocked.

Thank you to all healthcare workers. There would be no new level without life.

¹We have created a quarantine Spotify playlist with songs chosen by you! Check it out if you are also looking for a soundtrack to represent your current mood. Reggaeton included!

  1. Thank you for this post. My daughter is a nurse and she is exhausted, though not directly in contact with CoVid-19 patients, she is tasked for picking up the slack for others who are. It’s hard either way.

  2. Great post! “So I called up the Captain
    ‘Please bring me my wine’
He said, ‘We haven’t had that spirit here since 1969.’
And still those voices are calling from far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
    Just to hear them say…

You can check out but you can never leave.”

Love it. After your post, in lieu of the cancer allusion of the song, I feel an “indentured to circumstances” bent. Where, a fave quote of mine that I pretty much live by comes to mind. “Don’t waste trouble.”

Don’t waste trouble, is not ignoring it. Don’t waste trouble aligns with sidestepping the “reasonable expansion” need, to supplant it with a comfortability of the not-knowing, and going day by day, hold by hold. “Do I need protection here?” “Belay LOOSEN” called out. Or, “ROCK” to warn. TO warn like fear says “Notice that” to inform navigation. And, navigating OUT anxiety so it doesn’t kidnap fears road-mapping radar and torture and distort it into “being afraid.”

I ask for the current environment. Where are we top-roping? WHere are we leading? Where are we belaying?

“ to follow an imposed/uncertain path and adapt to the obstacles set for us each day. … which is life anyway.” Great stuff!

I feel it’s not the strongest who survive. It’s the most adaptable ones. And, your post extends a hand out for people to do that, to adapt, and keep up the climb that is life.

Thank you for your post. Solid. Like a rock. [Ok, you can sue me for pun-nitive damages on that one. 🙂 ]

  3. Virtual reality (VR) is a simulated experience that can be similar to or completely different from the real world. Applications of virtual reality can include entertainment (i.e. video games) and educational purposes (i.e. medical or military training). Other, distinct types of VR style technology include augmented reality and mixed reality.
