Kaitlin Crackers

I can’t tell you what the future of Dirtbag Diner will look like, but for now the YouTube show is on a temporary hiatus.  It was really fun to make, but also a lot more work than we collectively have time for.

We may continue the idea in other ways that include sharing recipes and experiences while cooking at the crag or at camp.  But, independent of what direction the theme takes, I wanted to share my favorite crag/hiking/camping recipe of all time.

The recipe comes directly from one of the founding members of theDIHEDRAL.  She is an amazing person who has moved on to do great things both in and out of the world of climbing.  Kaitlin is such a smart, spirited, adventurer.  She naturally lifts the pilgriming spirit of those around her and happens to value the significance of crag snacks as much as we do!

Kaitlin busted out this particular crag snack on one of our first adventures into the rocks.  Although, on the surface I wasn’t impressed with the sound of these snacks, I trusted Kaitlin enough to know that if she stamped these little nibbles as worthy morsels, then they were bound to be delectable!

They do not and will not disappoint!  She must have made 100 of them for four people and there was nothing but crumbs by the end of the day (I certainly ate more than my fair share).

The good news is that they are so simple that a child could make them.

I don’t think they have an official name, so let’s just refer to them as Kaitlin Crackers (or cookies, it’s debatable as to what type of food they fall under).

Kaitlin’s Crackers1

Ingredients: ROLOs (chocolate covered caramel candy) and Ritz Crackers.

Directions:

  1. Set half of the Ritz Crackers on a cookie sheet and place a ROLO on top of each cracker.
  2. Place cookie sheet in the oven at 350 degrees for 5 minutes.
  3. Place the remainder of the Ritz Crackers on top of the ROLOS and press the crackers together.
  4. Let stand for 5 minutes and try not to eat all of them.

The sweet and the salty, the crunch and the softness…what an absolutely perfect combo of culinary love!

It’s easy, it’s quick, it’s packable, Kaitlin Crackers/Cookies are the best snack I could envision for leveling up any hiking, camping, or climbing experience! I promise you will not be disappointed!

  1. For a bougie upgrade, try dipping the finished product into melted chocolate and topping them with sea salt.  If you want them to be more festive, top them with red and green sprinkles.  both are great options, but ultimately it will be difficult to improve upon the original!
