Gear Review

Just to make sure that we are clear, I trend toward the proletariat over the bourgeoisie.  While I’m not a total vanlife dirtbag, I am definitely more brown-collar (I just made this term up for dirtbags and trailblazers) than white-collar.  That is not to say that sometimes I like to cross the bourgie threshold into the world of finer things.

When it comes to soap, that world is not something that I would traditionally venture into, but I was once invited and have been living the lavish life ever since.

Several years ago, I was experiencing life.  It was not the happiest time I could have asked for.  We all get a chance to march through shit every once in a while, and it was just my time.  I was fortunate to have family and friends provide perspective and advice.  And like most shit tunnels I was able to grow in positive ways that may not have been possible without going through it.

I am exceptionally fortunate to have a mom who despite living in a different part of the country is remarkably adept at picking up minutiae and using it to make a difference.  It was a dry season, and while talking to my mom on the phone, I mentioned that I had really bad dry scalp.  Alberto VO5 wasn’t cutting it, and I needed to try a different shampoo.  That is a completely unremarkable, forgettable, and boring statement that no one would really care about.  No one except a mom.

A couple days later a package shows up on my step, and inside is the biggest bottle of shampoo/body wash that I have ever seen.  It was in fancy packaging with an ergonomic hand pump.  Not something I would ever purchase for myself.  Not something that you would find on the bottom shelf of the grocery store.  Not something that a brown-collar quasi-dirtbag would even know existed.

KIEHL’S Body Fuel All-In-One Energizing Wash!

It is tough to explain, but when one is going through shit, it really helps when you don’t smell like shit, and Kiehl’s Body Fuel smells amazing.  It’s tough to explain smell but washing with this stuff makes you smell like the world is kind of a good place!  I know that’s not really a smell, but there is a psychological effect that comes from smelling good.

Not only that, but based on some formulation of water, chemicals, probably some citrus, menthol, perhaps a little Zen, and whatever else it is that swanky companies use to justify cost, maybe untouched dolphin ureter and chestnut slivers, anyway, based on some combination of ingredients and magic, my dry scalp was alleviated as well!

While KIEHL’S Body Fuel All-In-One Energizing Wash is not cheap, that giant 1 Liter bottle lasted years.

That’s years of smelling like a million bucks, even when I may not have felt like a million bucks.

Now, I would never recommend anyone to spend money that they don’t have on something that they don’t need.  But…I would absolutely recommend spending money that you don’t need on something that you don’t have.  In other words, I wouldn’t make a habit of it, but sometimes treating yourself, or in my case treating someone you care about to something that can make a difference, even a small difference is worth it!

We all have to travel through the shit tunnel of life every now and then, but that doesn’t mean we can’t come through the other end smelling like roses (or some combination of menthol, dolphin ureter and chestnut slivers)
