Recently, High-Clip and I were luckily enough to spend some time in Salt Lake City, one of the premier climbing cities in the world. There’s great outdoor climbing in and around the city, with total beasts from every walk of life peppering the region. That being said, Salt Lake City has an incredibly high standard for good climbing, and a reputation built on upholding that standard. We made several stops throughout our journey, including stops at two separate Momentum Gyms.
We are no strangers to Momentum as we’ve previously reviewed both Houston locations with high marks.
Momentum Sandy happens to be the aviam omnium illorum. Built in 2007 and updated to include an expansive fitness and training center in 2022. Sandy has over 20,000 sq feet of climbing terrain, over 180 routes and over 180 boulder problems. And while Sandy might be a little bit older, she hasn’t lost a step.
With everything from overhanging arches to slabby finishes, she has lead climbing, crack climbing, top rope climbing, long boulders, short boulders, endurance routes, power routes, beginner, intermediate, and advanced routes, training, yoga, systems boards, as well as game nights, monthly breakfast club, comps, adaptive climbing, classes for all ages, summer camps, day camps, and an incredibly helpful staff.
One thing thar really stands out at Sandy is the insanely difficult crack climbing. They have some easier stuff, but they also bring out the goods with some overhanging lead cracks in the 5.12-5.13 range. It was difficult to even imagine the climbers who are sending these cracks! In addition, Momentum Sandy is the only gym we’ve been to that offers a full on off-width crack. We tried it. It was painful, and difficult, and fun. We drew blood. So, I guess you can say that we’re off-width climbers now!
The grades were consistent and in-line with what we have experienced at other Momentum locations.
The rates are consistent with a typical gym of this size at $25 for a no-frills day pass (harness, shoes, chalk, etc… not included). They also offer a two-week trial for a steal of just $39, so if you are thinking about hopping aboard the send train, I don’t know if you could find a better deal anywhere in the world!
I really loved the diversity of this gym. I loved the age and despite the worn walls, the holds are new, clean, and set by folks who clearly respect their craft and patrons. So, whether you are just passing through or call Salt Lake City home, Momentum Sandy is an absolute must!
Bonus Beta: Momentum Sandy is right next door to an REI, so if your shoes blowout, your chalk runs out, or you just want some new gear, all you have to do is hop out into that crisp mountain air for a few steps, and load up on all the goodies your heart desires/bank account can afford!

What do the Latin words mean in this post. Sounds like a great place.
