In case you haven’t been following along…
Each month this year, I’m creating a new climbing playlist for each decade going all the way back to the 1920’s. A hundred years of music! Not necessarily the best songs from each decade, but songs that I can envision on road trips, at the crag, at the gym, on training days, and on the send train.
We kicked things off in January with the 1920’s. February and March brought in hits from the 30’s and 40’s, April gave us the classics of the 1950’s, and we reached a crescendo in trying to pick from an onslaught of magnificent songs from the 60’s. The 70’s gave way to a new wave, which continued into the 1980’s. It could be argued that the 1990’s was the greatest musical decade of all time, which gives the 2000’s a tough act to follow.
While the 2000’s didn’t bring the musical diversity of the 90’s, The decade was still dominated by some of the best-selling pop artists of all time. Even those who don’t love pop music cannot deny the appeal of the fun and infectious music coming from the top of the 2000’s pop charts. Brittney Spears, NSYNC, Christina Aguilera, Janet Jackson, Beyonce, Rhianna, Black Eyed Peas, and Lady Gaga to name a few. Of course R&B, rock, and rap were going strong, and indie rock really started to put its stamp on the new millennia.
- Bohemian Like You – The Dandy Warhols
- Fell In Love With a Girl – The White Stripes
- New Slang – The Shins
- Golddigger – Kanye West
- Marching Bands of Manhattan – Death Cab for Cutie
- ’99 Problems – Jay-Z
- Daylight – Matt and Kim
- So Nice So Smart – Kimya Dawson
- Star Mile – Josh Radin
- Black Friday Rule – Flogging Molly
As always, in a list with only 10 songs there will be some tough cuts. One thing I realized while making this particular list was how amazing the production value of the 2000’s was. The toughest cuts for me were from the albums of the songs listed above. Death Cab for Cutie and The White Stripe for example released albums with some of the highest levels of repeatability of all time. The same can be said about Jay-Z, Kanye, Flogging Molly, and The Shins. Some particular songs that pained me to cut were Renegades of Funk by Rage Against the Machine, Shipping Up to Boston by the Dropkick Murphy’s, Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap, Paper Bag by Fiona Apple, Lebanese Blonde by Thievery Corporation, and Lake Michigan by Rogue Wave. I am thankful to soundtracks like Juno and Garden State for putting together some of the best compilations from the 2000’s, and as always, if I missed something from the 2000’s that you think deserves to be on this craglist just say the word, and I will add them immediately!

We are at one with only one band this time, Carrot. I’ll let you guess.
