About a month ago, my mountain bike, named Treks, was stolen outside of my building. It has been hard letting go of him, but I think it is time. We’ve all had gear come and go, and I think it’s nice to take a moment to appreciate them. So, let’s say goodbye to my old pal, Treks.
Dear Treks,
You were the first bike that was ever mine. When I saw you in that little outdoor shop, I was blown away. I figured you would be too fancy and way out of my budget. As it turns out, you were actually a year or two old, and no one had claimed you yet (I still don’t know how this was possible), so you were on a great sale. We went out for our first spin in the parking lot, and it was magical. You had front suspension, and a nice, wide frame and handlebars. You looked pretty slick, too. I was so happy to bring you to my new home (I had just moved), and I think you were happy to have a cozy place to live, too.
That first year we were out every day. Ripping around the city, we were unstoppable. You took me everywhere I needed to go, and never slowed down. Eventually I got a car, and maybe we stopped riding on the street some, but we finally got to hit the trails together. I think you liked it out there. Every hill and every drop seemed completely doable with you. If you remember, we had this trail we’d hit a bunch during the week, and each time we did it, I’d try to get “the perfect ride,” like in Ford v Ferrari. I’m not sure we ever got there, but boy, we got close. It was nice to keep working at it and see our improvements each day.
We moved again, and then you started to spend more time resting. I didn’t have so much time for rides anymore. Even so, I’d still come by and give you a pat so you knew you were loved. We eventually hit some new trails, and we definitely got humbled, but we got through it together. Mostly, we walked…but still. We finally got you some new tires (as we had worn through your previous treads). And that was that.
Then you got taken from me. I tried to find you and get you back, but no luck. You always have a home with me if you find your way back. I hope you are okay wherever you are, and someone is taking care of you. Thank you for all of the wonderful years together. We had a blast a together, and I appreciate every moment.
Love,
