The Interview
Q: How did your ninja nickname “Sober Ninja” come about?
A: Watching the show, I always saw Ninjas with nicknames. I’ve been sober since July 2, 2013—so, “Sober Ninja” just fit.
Q: How long have you had your own ninja gym?
A: We’ve been open since January 2024.
Q: What was your motivation in opening it?
A: Honestly, it started as a selfish reason. I used to coach for a mobile gym, but I wasn’t allowed to change obstacles. That wasn’t enough for my athletes to grow, so I knew I had to create a better training environment. Once the kids came in and I saw the smiles on their faces, the selfish reason disappeared.
Q: What sets Permian Basin Ninja Academy apart from other gyms?
A: We’re the first training facility in Midland, TX. I’d like to think the gym reflects my personality—genuine, scrappy, and full of heart.
Q: How did you get into ninja in the first place?
A: I always loved the show and started training at a regular gym. I set a goal to get on ANW and discovered there were leagues I could compete in as a stepping stone. I also thought maybe my story could help someone who needed to hear it.
Q: Who is your favorite ninja warrior, and why?
A: Karsten Williams. He’s been one of my biggest supporters since I opened the gym and is always helping me improve.
Q: What’s your favorite ninja gym to compete at?
A: Move Sport—I’ve got friends there, and we push each other. Power Pickle is another favorite because Coach Shawn is amazing with our athletes.
Q: Who’s your favorite ninja to train with?
A: Jonathan Bange. He pushes me past my comfort zone, and when my mind is racing, I can still hear his voice guiding me through.
Q: What obstacle best fits your personality?
A: The corkscrew. I might look normal at first glance, but once you get to know me, I’m all over the place! Only the people closest to me get the full Kendra.
Q: What’s your favorite non-ninja workout?
A: Burpees! Most people hate them, but I love them because they’re simple and work your whole body.
Q: What’s your ultimate fitness goal?
A: To stay healthy enough to be here for my family—and hopefully one day, my own.
Q: How did you become a course tester for ANW?
A: Someone reached out and connected me with a producer. I never knew how to even start that process—it just sort of unfolded in a really cool way.
Q: What was your favorite part of testing the ANW course?
A: Trying the obstacles and realizing what I’m capable of.
Q: What’s the first thing you’d do if you got “the call” to be a competitor?
A: Probably cry. I’ve always wanted my dad to see me compete live. Since he passed, that moment will be bittersweet—but deeply meaningful.
Q: What’s your best advice for others applying to ANW?
A: Be authentic. Don’t hold back. Show the producers who you really are—they remember the people who stand out.

Q: If someone had to describe your personality in two words, what would they say?
A: Kind and driven. I lead with positivity and go all-in on everything that matters to me.
Q: What’s one interesting fact about you that people would be surprised to learn?
A: Even though I’m very public, I keep my private life very private. I don’t let people in unless they’ve earned that space.
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Finland—that’s where my last name originates from.
Q: What’s your favorite song right now?
A: Fragile Minds by Silent Theory. It puts me at ease every time I listen to it.
Q: Favorite movies?
A: Corpse Bride, any Pirates of the Caribbean movie (love Johnny Depp), and Hercules (Disney version!).

Q: What would your dream guest-starring role be?
A: Mom. I love Anna Faris and think I’d fit in perfectly with that cast.
Q: One piece of advice for young kids playing sports?
A: If you want the reward, be willing to put in the work. That’s something my parents taught me, and I live by it every day.
