Jasmine Mejia

Jasmine Mejia is proof that sometimes the best adventures start with a single goal. What began as a challenge to do a pull-up at the gym has grown into a passion for climbing and community. Since stepping into her first climbing gym in late 2022, Jasmine has immersed herself in the climbing world, becoming an Arc’teryx Ambassador, organizing community events, and exploring outdoor crags across North America. When she’s not climbing, Jasmine works as a clinical therapist supporting children and youth with autism and other developmental disabilities. Her energy, positivity, and dedication to both her work and climbing community make her a force on and off the wall.

Getting Into Climbing

Q: How long have you been climbing for?

A: In 2022, I was going to the gym regularly and set a goal for myself to do a pull-up. I thought a climbing gym would be a fun way to build upper body strength, and that’s where my climbing journey began. December 10, 2022, was my first time ever stepping into a climbing gym, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Q: What is your main gym to climb at?

A: My home gym is Up the Bloc in Mississauga, Ontario, but I often climb at other gyms around the Greater Toronto Area like Top Rock Climbing, Hogtown Boulders, Climbers Rock, Joe Rockheads, and Boulderz Climbing.

Sponsorship and Community

Q: What brands are you sponsored or an ambassador for?

A: I am an Arc’teryx Ambassador for the Halton Hills Toronto Premium Outlets store, and I’m also an ambassador for the Canadian climbing clothing brand This Is Aid.

Q: How did you get your sponsorship or become an ambassador?

A: I’ve always loved the outdoors—hiking, camping, snowboarding, running, biking—you name it. I had already been wearing and supporting Arc’teryx for years. They host community events, and I connected with the team through those. My first year of climbing was such a great experience that I wanted others to feel the same, so I started organizing events to make climbing more accessible and encourage others to push their limits. I first became a friend of the brand and supported events at the Toronto Premium Outlets store, then became an ambassador the following year.

Climbing Adventures

Q: Where is your favorite place to climb and why?

A: So far, I’ve bouldered outdoors at Niagara Glen, Herrings Cove, Red Rocks, Joshua Tree, and Moe’s Valley. Each spot is unique and beautiful, but Red Rocks has been my favorite. Pulling on sandstone feels like you’ve stepped onto a different planet.

Q: What makes a good climbing gym in your eyes?

A: I love gyms with open layouts, good storage, and consistent setting across different styles. Bonus points if they have a café! I also love gyms that host community events where climbers can learn, grow, and connect.

Fun Questions

Q: Who is your favorite climber to watch?

A: I love Alannah Yip since she’s Canadian and an Arc’teryx athlete. I also really enjoy watching Oriane Bertone and Janja Garnbret.

Q: If you could climb with any celebrity, who would it be?

A: Ariana Grande, simply because she’s my favorite artist. She’d probably hate climbing, but it would be funny!

Q: What’s your go-to climbing music?

A: My playlists depend on the session. I’ll listen to K-pop (Blackpink, BTS, New Jeans), EDM (Calvin Harris, Martin Garrix), pop-punk/alt rock (Fall Out Boy, Paramore, Green Day), rap/hip-hop/R&B (Drake, J. Cole, Frank Ocean), pop (Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift), or even Disney music.

Q: If you were a climbing hold, which one would you be?

A: A volume—because I have a big, extroverted personality, I’m versatile, and you’ll always notice when I’m in the room.

Q: What do you like to do outside of climbing?

A: I grew up playing sports like basketball, volleyball, tennis, soccer, and snowboarding. I also play piano, guitar, and sing. Outdoors, I love camping, hiking, running, and being at the beach.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

A: New Zealand, Iceland, or Switzerland for their landscapes, natural beauty, and outdoor adventures.

Q: If you were a fruit, which one would you be?

A: A strawberry—bright, small, versatile, and at my peak in summer.

Q: What’s a fact about you people would be surprised to learn?

A: I thrift most of my clothes, house décor, and accessories.
