Basketball and Climbing

As you can tell Carrot and I are big basketball fans. But, as you can also tell of course that we are big climbing fans too. So that got me thinking what similarities are between the two. I know I’ve done this before with hockey now we are going to go over how basketball and climbing are alike.

First is explosive body movement, for basketball is the big jumps up for dunking and rebounding. For climbing it’s the big dynamic moves for dynos. Both need strong legs and trusting your complete body off the ground and wall.

Second is complete mental focus, for basketball it is not only knowing where the ball is, but also where the person you are guarding is at also. For climbing is reading the route and making sure you make that next move right with your legs and arms.

Third is movement sequencing, for climbing it is reading and climbing the “intended beta.” For basketball it is the plays you are running on where to go and where to set screens or use the screens. It’s all a continuous movement sequence.

I hope this made you look at basketball or climbing in a different aspect and that you go find a local gym or court to go have some fun on.

If you want to watch basketball for a little better understanding I highly recommend my favorite NBA team the Minnesota Timberwolves and Carrot’s favorite NBA team Detroit Pistons!
