Enchanted!

Enchanted Rock State Park in Fredericksburg, Texas, is one of the most beautiful spots in the Lone Star State.  With spectacular 360-degree views, this massive granite dome offers excellent opportunities for visitors to connect with nature.  From backpacking to stargazing, Enchanted Rock (E-Rock) has something for everyone.

Enchanted Rock presents a unique opportunity for climbers as well.  In a state inundated with vertical limestone walls and boulders, E-Rock offers an alternative with nearly 400 routes on slabby, vertical, crack climbs situated on bullet hard pink granite!  Most climbers in Texas cut their teeth on slab at E-Rock, the same can be said for climbing multi-pitch, placing pro, and cheese grating down the face of a 5.7 lead climb.

E-Rock is a remarkable destination in a state known primarily for its flatlands.  It offers exceptional climbing and has provided climbers from around the world with a lifetime of memories.  I’ve been lucky enough to climb there on several occasions and can’t wait to get back.

That being said, I was honored beyond compare when I was invited by hiker, writer, financial advisor, and Friend of Enchanted Rock, Robert C. Denning to share some ideas on climbing stickers that might be appealing to the rock climbers out at the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area Store.

So, I came up with a few ideas, surveyed our followers for a few more ideas, and I invite any of you, our readers to share your ideas as well.

Specs recommendation: 2-3 inches, die cut, durable vinyl.

Here are our top recommendations: (1-3 are my favorites)

  1. View of E-Rock centered inside a carabiner.  Essentially the sticker is a sketched biner, framed around the Enchanted Rock Dome.  Die cut in the shape of the carabiner.  If I saw that sticker, there is no way I’d pass it up.
  2. Sketched sticker of a cheese grater that just says “E-Rock” at the bottom.  Again, there is no way I’d pass this up.  Cheese grating at E-Rock is a rite of passage, it’s painful and bloody, and anyone who has fallen on granite slab can immediately relate!  Die cut in the shape of a cheese grater for bonus points!
  3. Mark of the Beast!  A beloved route at E-Rock, I can imagine a cute furry beast with horns and big eyes, with the name of the route and location. Again, die cut is the way to go!
  4. TOPO stickers are always fun too, and the Enchanted Rock topography is really cool!
  5. Capital letter “E” with the word “rock” on the middle line of the E.
  6. Sunrise over E-Rock was a nice recommendation.
  7. Motorboat!  Similar to Mark of the Beast, Motorboat was suggested as a possible sticker to draw climbers into the gift shop.  I’m thinking an old school motorboat with “Enchanted Rock” as the name of the boat.  We’re fans of this idea because of the work climbers have to do in the dihedral to top out!

Again, if you have any further recommendations, please drop them in the comments!

We were through Fredericksburg in late October last year, on our way to our winter home in Deep South Texas. We stayed overnight in F’burg but didn’t have time to do any touring. Enchanted Rock is one of our Texas bucket list hits, so hopefully soon. All of your sticker ideas are great!

Terry, you’ll love it there, the trails are fun whether you go around or on top. Maybe by the time you make it the stickers will be available.

I think I like option “2” best. The cheese grater reminds me of a rite of passage from boyhood to young adulthood in some Native American cultures. It’s usually done by an elder with a broken pottery shard.

I absolutely love, love, love this area and hiking it. Thanks for showing and describing the climbing routes!

I wanted to mention that if you’re ever there again, it’s so fun to have a Lone Star in the barn in Gruene, TX. Such a cool area of that state!

You’re welcome! Hope that you can catch live music there. And Luckenbach is worth it too! Great outdoor seating.
