Straight To Hell

If you are a fan of the TV show, Parks and Rec, you might recall a scene where Raul, portrayed by Fred Armisen, explains the reasons why someone in Venezuela could be sent “straight to jail.” I am no fan of the show but I am indeed Venezuelan and in my case, I’m going “straight to Hell” (watch clip to read line in proper tone).

Long gone are the days of freedom, lounging around, and Cheetos, as of today I am a candidate to burn, burn in the depths of Hell. This September, I will congregate with other insane individuals to endure the most torturous kind of Type-2 fun, climbing competition “24 hours of Horseshoe Hell”.

The event is exactly as the name entails, 24 hours of climbing… And that is as much as I know about it. People, I confess I am not 100% sure what I agreed to do, but Carrot was excited and that was enough for me. If you recall, fellow Dihedrean High-Clip competed in the event some years back, so she has filled us in on the dynamics and tricks to survive the quest. Following the veteran’s advice, training is at the top of my priority list.

I have been MIA from the blog and the climbing scene for some time now, so it is fitting that my comeback is during one of the most fun yet arduous events of the year, HA! I used to trail run and was used to long and strenuous physical activity, so you can imagine the pickle I’m in when the most extreme thing I’ve done these days is not flossing my teeth* (floss your teeth, dear readers!). Now… being serious, our training schedule is as follows:

  • Climb garage wall every night for a minimum of 30 minutes to build endurance
  • Aim to go to gym for high walls every weekend
  • Go for a 30-minute run 3 times a week
  • Hope for the best
  • Survive
  • Have fun
  • Make memories

Jokes aside, we are very excited and grateful for the opportunity and the chance we’ll get to make memories together. We understand the risks and responsibility that come with this type of event. We’ll keep you posted and updated on our Horseshoe Hell experience.

Any training advice you’d like to share with us? Gracias 🙂

Gaia

*I do floss my teeth, but sometimes I forget hehe.

Good luck! Have fun! Knowing how to train (and doing it) is key (both to making luck and having fun). You will doubtless need to remind yourself (during the event) that you’re doing it for fun. It will be the parts that are an ordeal that will make for lasting memories and good stories.
