Now we are talking about the “Undrafted” players that made an impact for the Pistons and Timberwolves. If you don’t know what “Undrafted” means here you go- In the NBA, an “undrafted” player is someone who was eligible for the NBA Draft but was not selected by any team during the draft’s two rounds.
That player can still make the NBA by:
- Signing as a free agent
- Joining a Summer League team
- Playing in the G League or overseas
- Earning a roster spot through hard work and development
So first I will talk about the 5 best pistons that were undrafted and how they affected the team in their time there (no particular order.)
- . Ben Wallace
- 4× Defensive Player of the Year
- Leader of the 2004 NBA Championship team
- Changed Detroit into a defensive powerhouse
- Hall of Fame career and franchise icon
- Chucky Atkins
- Important starting guard in the early 2000s
- Reliable shooter and playmaker
- Helped bridge the team into the championship era
- Darvin Ham
- Tough, high-energy role player
- Fit Detroit’s gritty identity perfectly
- Added defense and hustle off the bench
- José Calderón
- Veteran leadership late in his career
- Excellent passer and efficient shooter
- Helped stabilize the backcourt rotation
Next I’m going to talk about my Timberwolves in the same way (no particular order.)
- Naz Reid
- Sixth Man of the Year winner
- Huge scoring spark off the bench
- Key contributor to playoff success
- Fan favorite and modern franchise success story
- Jordan McLaughlin
- Reliable backup point guard
- Strong defense and smart decision-making
- Helped stabilize the second unit
- Gary Trent
- Tough interior scorer during the Kevin Garnett era
- Added physicality and rebounding
- Valuable frontcourt depth
- Taj Gibson
- Veteran leadership and toughness
- Mentor for younger players
- Reliable defender and rebounder
- Anthony Carter
- Steady backup point guard
- Defensive-minded leader
- Important depth piece on playoff teams
So for any NBA hopefuls out there it is okay if you do not get drafted on draft night. You can still get a spot and make an impact on a team more than you think.
I would say these two are the biggest undrafted players for each of the franchises.
- Ben Wallace → Most impactful undrafted player in Pistons history.
- Naz Reid → Most impactful modern undrafted player in Timberwolves history.
