So, if you are thrown off by the title of this article “Climb like a girl”, there’s a reason I (Coach Max) am talking about this today.
Today, everybody in the morning crew was working on a route that’s graded a 12, but nobody has got to the top yet. A few of the climbers were close after a few attempts but one of the regulars Emily came up and her first time on the route, she got one hold away. The morning climbers started talking about climbing like a girl, which I thought was funny because I teach that in my recreation programs and we teach at our summer camps.
You may be wondering ‘what do you mean climb like a girl?’ Well I mean USING and depending on your legs more than your arms. Especially the newer male climbers who think climbing is all about upper body and want to depend on that to get them up the wall. In reality when women climb they know their leg muscles are stronger than their arm muscles so when they climb they depend on their legs and feet. In climbing that is what all of us should do!
So the lesson for all first time climbers especially the male climbers who depend mostly on their upper body just take a step back and don’t be afraid to climb like a girl. You will be happy with your results!
