Well I know the title threw some of you off that’s because I had a fun experience with some people that I consider good friends outside of where I normally see them on a daily basis. Let’s start with the meaning Introvet… An introvert is someone who generally feels more comfortable with less social stimulation and often recharges by spending time alone or in calm environments. That is me to the definition outside of work, once I enter work a flip gets switched and I’m an extrovert which obviously is the opposite of introvert! Now if you truly know me I’m an anti social outside the gym person, I have to really consider you a true friend to hang out with you outside the gym off the clock. But that also means I got your back anytime any day and any place!
Here’s some interesting facts when it comes to rock climbers inside and outside the gym:
- A 2025 study of climbers found that 46.8% identified as introverts, 37.1% as ambiverts, and only 16% as extroverts. Yet 74.1% reported interacting socially with other climbers during climbing sessions.
- A 2022 study comparing 50 recreational climbers with 50 other athletes found no significant difference in extraversion between the groups. Climbers did, however, score higher in conscientiousness.
- Interestingly, older research on high-risk sports found participants—including rock climbers—were more extroverted than nonparticipants, while Everest-climber research also found higher extraversion among that particular elite group.
- A recent systematic review concludes that the personality research on climbers is mixed and that climbers aren’t simply one personality type.
So there is some scientific evidence of how I am and how I’m sure many others are. Now I will say at this hangout I was more extroverted than introverted which I was proud of myself on doing. But the gym is a safe space for myself just like many others and that’s the way it should be. I hope all your introverts have that climbing gym and group of people at your climbing gym that you’ve grown to be friends and you can step outside your shell you may have.
The people you grow close to at a climbing gym have the possibilities to be great friends and help you even grow as a person!
So now you tell me are you an extrovert? Introvert? And how different are you inside the gym and outside the gym? Let’s hear it!
