Comp. Coach!!!

I had the honor to help out and coach the competition team at the gym I work at this week. For those of you that already know I am a rec. coach/director of recreation at my climbing gym. I coach and am in charge of all the recreation side which includes coaching all the kids, moving them up, training the coaches, curriculum and more. So I do coach and I do have a history of helping coach the developmental comp team at my climbing gym.

I also (before I coached rock climbing) created and coached a competition kids ninja warrior team at a gym. So yes and no I’ve had time coaching competition teams. But this week I got asked to help one day with the head location competition coach and help coach a comp practice with another comp coach and I loved it!

I got an opportunity to coach the main competition team and got looked at for more than just a recreation coach. I know I do not have deep history (like current team coaches) of being on the competition team myself but I feel like that it almost gives me a different coaching aspect and accountability they may not be used to.

I had a blast though coaching the comp team not only because of the past kids I’ve coached in the recreation programs before they got moved up, but also kids I never coached before. I enjoyed this week so much and I can honestly say there was winning moments like helping a few kids get farther on some project routes and sending their project routes as well as pushing them on their core workouts and bouldering drills.

Overall I had a amazing time, I may get another opportunity in the future or this may have been my only time but I’m thankful for this week of coaching the competition team and I hope I made a difference in their climbing this week even if it was only for six total hours.
