I haven’t done this type of article in a very long time. But I was thinking what climbing holds could relate to the emotions from the Disney movie Inside Out. Here is a little bit about the movie Inside Out for those who haven’t seen either movie…
Inside Out follows Riley, an 11-year-old girl whose family moves to a new city. Inside her mind, five emotions—Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust—work together to help her navigate the challenges of growing up. The movie explores emotions, memories, family, and why it’s important to experience all of our feelings.
Inside Out 2 picks up with Riley as a teenager. As she enters a new stage of life, new emotions—including Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui—arrive in Headquarters. The emotions struggle to adjust as Riley faces new experiences, friendships, and the pressure of figuring out who she is becoming.
Now that you have a better idea of Inside out, I’m gonna be putting rock climbing holds with the appropriate emotions/characters and why they go with one another!
Jugs- Joy of course because if it is an easy warm up route or just a more difficult route that has an overhang or turned sideways everybody is joyful when grabbing a jug knowing that most of the time they are not coming off the wall.
Crimps- Fear is the choice because depending on the crimp when you go to grab it a sense of fear comes as you are holding onto it before making that next move.
Slopers- Disgust because sometimes you just get to a sloper and the way it’s positioned or at on the wall it’s not good at all and you feel Disgusted when you try to grab it every which way.
Pinches- Envy for Pinches because you don’t think too much or talk too much about pinches on routes as much as Crimps or Slopers. Pinches are almost like the ugly step sister that Envy’s the other holds that get all the attention good or bad.
Pockets- Sadness because on those tougher routes they set small pockets where you can barely stick your fingers in so you become sad trying to position your fingers in those pockets.
Foot chips- Anxiety for sure because those foot chips are not always solid on routes, they are probably more slick or just super tiny so that anxiety of your toes staying on it increases tremendously.
I know I didn’t get through all the emotions but I think from what I used that they are pretty on par with the holds that I put with them. If you have not watched Inside Out or Inside Out 2 go watch it, it’s really good Disney movie and see if you agree on what emotions match the type of rock climbing holds!
